Wilhelm von Simpel Boot designs his boats in FreeShip 2.6. This is a free software in which one can draw boat hulls, show it 3-dimensional and calculate basic figures of the hulls. Beside the well-tried FreeShip, today there is an also free advancement called DelftShip 3.2. Which of both versions one uses, is fine pure taste thing. Both are found easy in Google and are quick downloaded from the Internet. They run smooth and without problems on all actual Windows XP or Win7 computers.
After modelling of a body one can look at it of all sides. The software then calculates for example the displacement or the center of lift.
Variations of some geometrical dimensions are next from a basic draft of course easily
deductive. My portion in the body design consisted first in expressing my wishes.
Then Wilhelm sent me his daily improvements by mail which examine I immediately in the PC
and could comment. Here one of the first attempts at the middle of October, 2010.
When we liked together the basic form the first it came out as: 5.5 m of length, straight bow, counter stern and lengths to width ratio of 3. We also wanted sometimes something in our
hands - even if 3D representation in the PC gave already a good impression.
After some trying I could draw the right data from FreeShip. Next I processed this data in a
CAM Software (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) and converted the design into commands to control a milling machine to do the job. Here as an example once the representation of the half model of 30th October 2010 in the CAM software.
Quick some foam on the milling machine and the program loaded. First I have played a little with the scale. In the foreground a body with approx. 10-cm length. Behind a bigger model. The rough machining is concluded. Now follows the fine feed planishing.
Finally, from these 30-cm-long half models I have made some pictures to the design comparison. This
digital photo again I always immediately mailed to Wilhelm. First step before "beaming" ;-)
Well, so the amateur handicraftsman fumble around start of 21ten century... My 8-year-old daughter asked me (born in 1963) today whether we had had a Nintendo DS in our childhood? - or a computer? - what will they ask her children once?
Of course one can take over the data from DelftShip/FreeShip also in other CAD systems for the further planning. Here initialy the first taste pattern with my new machine and a screw dummy. In addition, however, later more.
